General
Description: Patchouli is a very fragrant herb
with soft oval leaves and square stems. It grows from
2 to 3 feet in height and provides an unusual odor that
is nonetheless characteristic of patchouli when the
leaves are rubbed.
Phytochemistry: Oil
of Patchouli is thick, the colour being brownish-yellow
tinted green. It contains coerulein, the vivid blue
compound found in matricaria, wormwood and other oils.
It deposits a solid, or stearoptene, patchouli alcohol,
leaving cadinene.It is laevorotatory, with the specific
gravity of 0.970 to 0.990 at 15 degrees C. (59 degrees
F.).
Constituents of the
oil-Alcohol: Patchoulol, Phenol, aldehydes,
Evenol, luglviol, cadinene, benzoic, cinnamic, patchoulene,
which yields a strong scented essential volatile oil
commonly known as oil of Patchouli.
Main Actions: Diuretic
and carminative, Antifungal, Aphrodisiac.
Main Uses:
- Internal use
- It is also taken internally (leaves)
as an aphrodisiac and is used in both Chinese
and Indian medicine.
- External use
- It can be used for inflamed and
itching skin.
- Patchouli is used externally for
the effect it has on skin infections, eczema (specially
weeping eczema), acne, chapped skin, hemorrhoids,
as well as varicose veins.
- It is used for bad breath and halitosis.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil
use
- The heavy essential oil of patchouli
will "ground" and sharpen the wit of
the person treated. It will relieve anxiety as
well as depression.
- In the body, it helps to remove
excess water, is useful for cellulite removal,
as well as having good deodorizing properties.
- On the skin, patchouli is of great
help since it promotes cell rejuvenation, tightening
of loose skin and heals wounds and sores, while
sorting out rough, cracked skin.
- The oil also has good insect repelling
properties and is used to repel leeches.
- It has antidepressant, antiphlogistic,
antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cicatrisant,
cytophylactic, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge,
fungicide, insecticide, sedative and tonic properties.
