Exclusivity of Indian Herbs
Modern era is suffering more from non communicable diseases than communicable ones like life style ailments etc. In reciprocation there is paradigm shift in therapeutic approach based on the premise of “Prevention is better than cure”. In this context, nutraceuticals based on herbals, botanicals or plants captures the first place among all. The most ancient and sustainable nutraceutical medical science originates from India.
Indian medicinal herbs are unique in their own way and quite exclusive and diverse in nature. India has 16 different bioclimatic zones among 20 and stands 7th in the world for biodiversity. 15000 medicinal plants have been identified till date, of which 1200 are in regular use. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical treatise provides detailed information about them. Its advice commands consummation from a sizeable part of the population even today.
Herbs are the complex structures containing thousands of bioactive molecules or active principles working synergistically for this desired disease preventive effect.
Standardized herbal extracts or phytochemicals are the concentrated dried residues of a fluid extraction prepared from herbage.
Normally the fluid doing the extraction is critical since it must "extract" (or bring out of the herb material into the fluid) all of the important medicinal ingredients within the herbage. The solvent varies as per constitution of herb, and ranges from water to alcohol to even liquid carbon dioxide coupled with criticality of extraction temperature and length of time. This dried residue is shifted to vacuum drying (freeze-drying, or lyophilization) for final phytochemical product.
There is ongoing contest in between standardized herbal extract or a whole herb to be implemented in medicine but, in general, evidence (through analysis) shows that if extract is equivalent in ‘ingredient composition ratios’ with the whole herb, then the phytoextract is always superior as it is standardized and concentrated. Still bioassay is the ultimate tool to establish therapeutic supremacy between the two.
