It
is the volatile oil from leaves of Ocimum
basilicum L./Ocimum sanctum.
The major constituents are methyl chavicol, cineol,
linalool, eugenol and small amounts of methyl eugenol
and sesquiterpenes. Basil oil has high anti-bacterial
anti-depressant, anti-infectious, anti-spasmodic, anti-viral
stimulant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used
in spice and flavor applications, in perfumery and in
aromatherapy.
